Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument for social activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma to later direct an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of one on the jury. Due to her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
